a visit to the bookstore usually makes me lift up the latest edition of Superman/Batman. however, the last couple of times that i was in the bookstore, it was the same edition that they have, the one that i tried to read but cannot read because that was Part 2 of 2 of their mini-saga where Batman goes nuts. so i didnt want to continue reading that.

i went to the racks and found 52, which was what the comic book club of the bookstore will be discussing next on their meeting. i lifted it up but was afraid to look inside. it looked nice, and nice means i want to buy it. i wasnt ready to buy anything tonight (except that cup of coffee). then i looked some more and found Superman/Batman books, and looked away fearing that it will make me do an indiscriminate purchase (yes! i do love that series that much). so looked a couple of books and found this: Superman For Tomorrow. two volumes. i looked inside and that was enough to intrigue me.

so for the next 50 minutes i was able to finish Volume 1 and was 75% done with Volume 2. my assessment so far: this is nuts! it drove me crazy. its either the speed reading technique or the lack of time for me to understand carefully (because i just wanted to like finish the books), but the story drove me nuts. I mean, i got the whole story, but it kindda was in a way that you wouldnt want to appear on the panels of your comic book. it wouldve passed to see the images as a cartoon or a movie, but as a comic book, with that lack of back story, it will drive you nuts.

so when i got myself settled at home (after lots of minutes spent for other things), i googled the comic book and found myself looking at wikipedia for some insight. it was telling me the same thing that i was thinking. so maybe, i just thought that i didnt understand it. i just needed a validation that i understood it, and thats what the site gave me. while i read through it more, i wanted to know some more, and thats what i'll be doing next.

after all these: realized that it was interesting.

Dr. Jose Rizal

The Philippines is celebrating Rizal Day today. Dec 30th is the day when Dr. Jose Protacio Mercado Rizal was shot in Bagumbayan which is now known as Luneta Park. He is the Philippine national hero for he fought against Spanish occupation by acquiring knowledge that the foreigners can give him, and fought with his mighty quill pen and wrote powerful novels and other materials that the Spanish deemed subversive.

I am a fan of Rizal because I love reading "Noli Me Tangere". i have three copies of "Noli", an easy reading from High School, another Filipino version i picked from the bookstore, and the nicest and my favorite one which is my college book that is in English. the English version had more power for me when I read it. oh yeah! I also have a comic book version of "Noli". Its been a while that I've read it (say, four years), and I am quite disappointed that I was not able to bring that book when I came here to MD. If u get to see a copy of that book, try to read it. It is a nice piece of art that will surely get you hooked. its sequel, "El Filibusterismo" is a wonderful book as well, but not as much as "Noli". Comparably, "Noli" has a better structure and with more compassion. "El Fili" has more grit and emotions to its story, and it has a direct approach on being subversive, i might say.

Going Christmas (2)

by this time, kids are preparing to be in the Christmas spirit. they are dreaming of 230pm when the class is over and is it Christmas break now? but kids, before you get out of school, bring home some cute goodies called books. these books might be available in your school library or if not, check out the local library. you dont need to have a required reading to read books, right? you just have to be in that spirit of reading books that are thematic, in this case, themed for Christmas.

The Reading List

yey! im done with most of the books that have been lined up for who knows how long. actually, wait, they are the latest additions to the list and they were the ones i got done with. i cannot implement FiFo on this list as reading for me most of the time depends on what i want to and feel like reading. as of yet, i have finished the immediate line of graphic novels that i have, and the problem with that is that i cannot wait to add some more. like after reading 1602, i just wanted to get the rest of the series such as 1602: Fantastick Four, and 1602: The New World. call me hooked to it! then i just finished Y: The Last Man which started out not fine but ended up with me wanting to get the rest of the series as well!!! it was a good read for me, and an easy one after the lag at the start of the series, thus yes, i just want to get it. i just want to see what Yorick's fate will be.

side note: the funny thing that happened earlier tho was that before I had to attend a talk about Feminist Philosophy, I was reading Y and the part was about the Amazon women. It was funny to think of the biases of each group and how generally, feminists are regarded as of Amazonian type (which are feisty and man-hater.)

so next on my list. Fast Food Nation (gathering up my energy to finish it before the semester ends...for school), Catch 22 (so that i can return it to the school library on time), Nights At Rodanthe (because i have not finished it), and my readings for my paper (which oooh... i havent started yet!)

some of the things i was looking at (and was keeping my hands from snagging right up), are part of this list, especially Superman/Batman #1 with Public Enemies. i wanted to always snag a Neil Gaiman book also, but yesterday i was looking at Marvel's 1602. Other's that i wanted was Brad Meltzer's Identity Crisisbecause i like Brad Meltzer as an author. and look! Y: The Last Man is also part of the list! i still havent even finished Volume One to this day (coz ive not lift it up since i the last time i read it.)

actually, i wasnt really meaning to follow, but the funny thing was i suddenly hummed this tune out of nowhere. the least i can tell you about the song is that according to the webs, the translation of the title "Ni Yao De Ai" is "The Love You Want". and how i encountered this is because this was one of the songs of the most loved Taiwanese show dubbed into Filipino, "Meteor Garden" which was based on a manga called "Hana Yori Dango" that when translated is "Boys Over Flowers"(?)

fall in love like a comic

 this is the title of the manga that i was talking of earlier. the series i bought to fill the gap between my quest to complete Absolute Boyfriend. i got a short series again, thankfully. it has two volumes only, and at this time, i was able to finish it. its a cute read. its about a girl who writes manga (called mangaka) and she gets involved with this guy in her aim to "research" about guys to find more inspiration in her work. other words, its really "falling in love like a comic." too good to be true indeed. the realistic thing about the story is how real life events make u inspired to write or be creative. i find her amusing and relatable since with my quest to finish my short story, taking some elements from real life draws the realistic image that will establish a good character and story plot worth reading by your target audience. cant wait to see my outcome!

since yesterday, i have this idea on my mind and all i wanted to do was write it down. the knack for writing always kicks me whenever i get into reading a lot, and now is no different. my bug for writing a short story is getting to me. i dunno yet how short the short story will be but i have a draft of how the flow is. i have not gone into starting it really, but my plot outline has all the little ideas that i have, and so also i know what i have been thinking during my high time when i bump into the block.

my fingers are ready to write it all down!

yes! i actually lifted a manga too and got hooked on reading it. Before going to the register to pay for it, I realized i was on page 23 already. Absolute Boyfriend by Yuu Watase is hilarious, and unlike what Browser has been reading (ie: Strawberry 100%), Absolute Boyfriend has six volumes only. SIX!!! yes! I got Vols 1 and 2, so i have 4 more to go!

Neil Gaiman

i cant remember if i got this link to Neil Gaiman's blog fromBrowserMetrics, or maybe i stumbled into it somehow in WWW, but its been a while that its been in my bookmarks list, and on this fateful day, i opened his blog. in bold letters, i saw his title

SO YOU KNOW

and in a rather short as a sentence post was the word Philippines. then i made a quick scan on his page, and it was a couple of posts about him being in the Philippines for the Philippine Ad Congress.

my reaction: OH MY GOSH! That is so effin great! (so maybe i really didnt use effin) but what the fuck right? i mean, awesome! if you go to his site, his Nov 26 post has a link to another blog post about this guy who met up with Neil Gaiman in the Ad Congress. now, its not only how awesome it is to see him, there was something more to it. apparently, he got to construct a great plan where Mr. Gaiman will be instrumental in witnessing as the blog writer, a male, will propose to his girlfriend! woohoo!

well, anyway, that is all i can share right now. i need to go back to the site some other time and read it again. im too tired to read all that he has to say about Las Islas.

The Children of Hurin

yes! I hate myself. I forgot that the 40% ends today for purchasing the new Tolkien book. damn! anyway, seeing it on last weeks list made me excited. I want to get a copy of it! thats the only thing that matters to me... hmmm... maybe. (but getting a 40% discount will be a whole lot better! from $26 to $15? *argh!*)

a critique in Yahoo.Com says its a little different from the usual Tolkien stories, as this is more sad or to use his word, it is "gloomy". heck! the Tolkien brain is what matters in reading his works! plus, it has a character named Morgoth... a name that resembles to mine! haha! just that Morgoth is a villain. eeep! hihihi! =o)

so hopefully i'll get it this weekend, and see when i can start on it... i'll squeeze it in between textbooks. =o)
