Must've Done Something Right

Whenever you feel exhausted, you look back and think why you're doing things in that manner. Giving all your time, hard work, passion, energy-- you stop and think why put in all these effort. For what cause? For what purpose? For whose benefit do I do this for?

I'm in the world of public service and there is much expected of public servants. There are times that it breaks my heart when I on my capacity cannot comply on requests or anything like so. For example, in our everyday work, we encounter people who would ask for assistance for their medical needs and everyday living. You wonder sometimes why they ask for subsistence when they have able bodies that can contribute to the society and economy. Work in layman's term, is something that they can do to be able to make ends meet. Yet you begin to wonder, but the question in these people's minds might be also, can they get me a job which can provide for me and my family? I hope I have that ability.

Then there are the opportunists. People who try to have their whole lives and family depend on you (and other political offices for this case in my thoughts.) I had a message sent to my office email loop several weeks ago, ranting about a family who for our concern in this office, have depended the education and every trying sustenance of their family in our office and still want to exhaust us dry. Not that we have extended a six figure amount to this family, but a four figure value for education have been extended and there are others that we have to extend our hand to also. If advocacy will be our basis, I cannot even say that the course of the child is within our advocacy even. Hotel and Restaurant Management is not up our ante. AGHAM is Filipino for Science, but still we extended our hands because we didnt want a child to stop education especially when its her senior year in school.

Then there are those whose little gestures warm your heart so much.

One of our scholars for this Second Semester went back to our office and shared with us a couple of books as a thank you gesture for including her in our educational assistance program. She and her father thanked us a lot and wished us God's blessings in our everyday lives.

Requests are common in our office and we try to extend to some of them. A High School student whose mother sent us a request letter for her daughter's participation in an international competition. I took the letter and kept it with me for two weeks until after the Christmas holiday I took it out again and told the mother that she can pick up her request after the New Years. It has been a week and the holiday course got to me and made me forget a bit that I asked her to come by when office resumed. So when she came by I just took out a couple of what was left in the office budget and handed it over to the mom. It wasn't much, just a four figure amount that turns to two figures when you convert it to US dollars.

Three weeks ago, my office mate sent an email for a draft resolution commending students who won an international competition. We'd like to appreciate the representation that they did and the performance that they showed in the competition. Then I encountered one of the top medalists names. My short term memory forgot the first name of the child we helped but I said the last name sounded familiar. To make matters a little off, there was another child in the winners list who had a similar last name.

Yesterday the student dropped by. I never met the kid since it was her mother who went to our office before. She handed me a letter for my boss. After she left I opened the envelope and browsed through the letter. There I knew that she was the student we extended help to, and there I knew that she will be one of the recipients of the commendation we drafted.

In the letter she thanked my boss for extending help when they needed it most. It was a great experience to join a math competition and was extra sweet that she together with other students won the competition. As I read more of it, I cant help but feel warmed by this. The little things that you do for others can contribute greatly to some people.

As I think about her and all the other kids who we've helped, and all the other people we've extended our time, effort, thoughts, money and support to, I cannot help but appreciate the job I go to everyday. I entered  government service for the love/ appreciation of politics (as seen in my educational background) but once youre in it, you realize that there are deeper reasons to it. PUBLIC SERVICE... you appreciate it and it also can make you frustrated. The softy in me has that tendency to want to continue extending her hand to everyone who deserves it and feel the frustration when they start crying or getting mad at you because you cannot extend anymore. Because your well of opportunity only holds as much as it can handle at a given time. But this is where you get to toughen up also, discerning may be the better word for it, because there are people who take the opportunity to dry the well and still forget that they should be thankful for the little or big things that you've done for them.

I hope there is balance in life, truly, but when the opportunists of this world of public service tries to frustrate me, I will try to think of the ones whose lives we've touched and think of their little gestures that have made a big impact in my life, in our lives, and in how we continue to do this service.

We must've done something right to deserve the movers in our lives and in our hearts.

"Lawmaker pushes higher salary for scientists"

AGHAM Party-list Representative Angelo B. Palmones reiterates his call for the exemption of our scientists and R&D government workers from the Salary Standardization Law (SSL).

This call came in light of the 6.9 magnitude earthquake in Negros Oriental and other parts of Visayas last Monday, February 6th, that caused casualties as well as road and property damage. According to the Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), they are aware of the existence of these major fault lines but the incomplete geohazard map and study is due to their lack of experts in the regional office to finish the mapping.

“They invest their time, energy and knowledge in making the rest of the country assured that we are able to manage ourselves in times of calamities, yet we cannot compensate them properly to have them receive what they deserve.” Palmones says.

He adds that having an attractive pay will prevent our scientists from accepting job offers in other countries. Like the story of PAGASA where meteorologists flee the country for a better job offer, PHIVOLCS have encountered the same problem with their geologists.

“The attractive compensation will also attract college students to think of taking up science courses like Geology, Engineering, and hopefully in the near future, Meteorology,” Palmones continues. “An addition to our pool of experts who exert passion and value to their job is what our country needs now given the natural phenomena that we encounter each year.”

Palmones is the author of HB 2004 and HR 85, both on the exemption of PAGASA employees from the SSL and providing for their salary scale. Congressman Palmones and the AGHAM Party-list have also ongoing discussions on launching a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology program to be offered in SUC’s in the coming school year. Press Release

Solon Commends Successful Passage of Domestic Workers Treaty

AGHAM Party-list Representative Angelo B. Palmones commends the Department of Labor and Employment for their participation and great support in the recently concluded International Labor Organization’s Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Conference delegates adopted last June 16, 2011 the Convention on Domestic Workers of 2011 by a 396 Yes votes, 16 No votes and 63 Abstentions. The importance in the adoption of this treaty is to set the standards on how to treat and care for the domestic household workers all over the world. In an interview, ILO Director General Juan Somavia calls the passage of the treaty as a historical move since this is the first time that the informal sector is being given significance.

“This is a great victory to our unsung Heroes, particularly the kasambahays overseas.” says Palmones. “Our overseas Filipino workers who work as household helpers sacrifice a lot in their personal liberties in search of better pay and income. Some of them have a great story to tell but there are a lot who suffer inhumane treatment from their foreign employers in hopes of taking a paycheck at the end of the month to send to their families here at home.”

The passage of this treaty also benefits our local domestic workers. It is to this matter that the AGHAM Representative also appeals to the leadership of the House Committee on Labor and Employment to immediately pass House Bill No. 4277 or the Magna Carta for Domestic Workers 2011. “The Bill seeks to institutionalize the work of our kasambahays by setting definite standards which will include their minimum wage, number of hours of work and the benefits that they can receive while being a household help.” Representative Palmones is a co-author of said legislative measure. my unsolicited opinion on an issue

i posted this on my Twitter using Twitlonger and since this is a blog post in itself, it needs to be posted here too. this is my view about Bro. Armin Luistro, currently appointed as the Education secretary and former President of the De La Salle University system, my alma mater. Anyone who knows me that I've not always been supportive of what Bro. Armin has supported, but in this case, I understand his reaction with the issue. It might not have been a favorable reaction to media men, but it doesn't mean that he isn't right in reacting that way.

"Not coz I'm a La Sallian, I'm giving reason out of Bro. Armin's action during his media interview on his first day on the job. But I think it isn't right that Bro. Armin should be singled out, or persecuted, for his blunt reaction when asked by the media for his comment re: sex education. He shared his thoughts to the media, and to all of us, because for him who comes from both the academe and the Church, it isnt right that we try to witness two factors of society clash into each other and enjoy the fight going on. Bro. Armin, being from both sectors, is left to understand each side and each point that needs to be understood and evaluated in order to know how to execute a move and finalize a decision on the issue. The media might have seen this part of the interview as overbearing and snobbish, yet they've forgotten that before this, they were able to speak to him in a nice manner."

unlucky 13 (and others)

damn it! The Orioles have been banking on losses now. as if the whole season's losses wasn't enough, they are running out of fuel and is one day short for a complete two week streak lost. how awesome? blech! its like they took a break before the real break, especially the pitching pool (the starters and the bullpen). they are making me... sad. its really nothing new considering the performance the whole season, but to have continuous losses under the new "Trembley approach", i think abracadabra didn't do that magic. ah shux! ah suck! on to the weekend! i'll just get my keg.

other news, if you haven't known this yet, then i dont want you outdated, but i am an official GLEEK. what is a 'gleek'? its a term some person coined for crazy fans (ahem, like me) of this new Fox show called "Glee". i got into it last week, wherein i spent 4 hours (or less) watching the first four episodes in Hulu that made me sleep at 430am (so calculate what time i actually started). its about a school teacher who's an alum of this public school, who was also a former member of a glee club. But when the school was about to axe the glee club, he took over it and tried his best to win the approval of his colleagues and the popularity of the group with the student body. His mission, besides getting more members, is to win the regionals. aaah! its a breath of fresh air against the common 'mature' shows, reality shows, and Gossip Girl. now while waiting for my other shows, i have something to look forward to (on Wednesday nights at 9pm. check your local listings too, and Hulu).

in a more serious tone, if you're a Filipino or know Filipinos, then you have heard of the great flood that surrounded Metro Manila, Philippines over the weekend. it was really bad as i cannot believe what had just happened to the whole area. it was surrounded with water in every street and highway, and people struggled to save their lives and some of what they have. it was awful. it was an awful sight that i felt bad for everyone. that is why in any possible way, i have been helping out some people who have used social networking site Facebook, and site Twitter in disseminating information about relief operations and any help that can be extended. a lot of people need help right now. food, clothing, basic needs, money, clean potable water. all these are still needed by a lot of families displaced by this tragic misfortune. so if you need information on how you can extend your help, here's a very helpful site: http://superbianca.blogspot.com (thanks to Bianca Gonzalez for compiling them). If there are other questions, or if you're looking for other sites to check out about this, you may ask me thru email or twitter: margeemateo. Here's a link also that you can access that has an overview of what happened some 5 days ago, http://www.techpinas.com/2009/09/typhoon-ondoy-video-footages-and-news.html

alright! i guess im not indebted in this blog now. until the next time i have the urge to write this much. =)

"Cory Magic"

with the passing of former Philippine president Corazon Aquino, i saw that the "Cory Magic" was relieved. i was deeply touched by those who showered the streets with yellow confetti, and everyone who stretched their arms and held out a letter L with their fingers, symbolizing "Laban" or "fight!". The "Cory Magic" will live on, that's for sure, but the "laban" that we are on, what is it really about though?

are we fighting for what is right or just? or are we fighting to gain power that we want?

i hope that the "Cory Magic" will be an inspiration to fight for our country, for its betterment, and not to just merely support the next politician, a traditional politician (Tra-Po or "rag") who will use the "Cory Magic" to their advantage. i hope that actually no one will use the "Cory Magic" or Cory's legacy to their personal advantage to achieve the power that they want. Mahiya naman kayo! (Be ashamed of yourselves!) its time for the Philippines to have a change for its betterment, and not to disobey and disappoint the legacy that former President Cory Aquino had lived for.

Democracy is the government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Let's all work together to continue with what President Aquino has started, and make her as our inspiration to continue her dreams and goals.

its as easy as ABC

hey you! what is the matter with you?
with the 2010 Philippine Presidential elections 12 months away, former President Joseph Estrada has expressed that if there's no one to hold together, to bond, the opposition bloc, then he will be forcing himself to run for President.

are you kidding me?
apparently no, they were serious about it. they were too serious that they want some little changes on the legality of his pardon, that the portion where it says, "you cannot run for public office" is being challenged right now. AND it has come to my attention that many people have come to back him up on his leap to going back to public office.

is this some kind of joke?
well it is not. a month or two ago when i first heard about this, and as much as i dismissed it as a joke, i was disgusted by this. with facebook pages popping up to show support for Estrada, the pit of my stomach felt like it was wanting to throw up to all who think this is possible. i know there are people who still support him, but the biggest threat to mankind (or to the FIlipino people) are those who helped in taking him out of office for the same reason and conviction as what i have (which is his corruption and all his great stuff), and now they are trying to support him! to back him up in his WANT to run for President! does everyone have Alzheimer's? it has only been 8 years since Edsa People Power II, when we walked up the streets because we clamored to remove a President who broke our trust, and he is the same person we want in that position again? are these people senile that just because some Philippine history books have not written down the events of eight years ago, that we forgot it was in our diaries where we put that Estrada was tried for perjury and corruption? you have some problem, sisters and brothers!!!

how difficult is it to understand, anyway?
i do not know about you, but for me, it is as easy as ABC. we cannot segregate a corrupt President just because he is the biggest opposition of the current administration. we are committing too much errors in our decision. the President Arroyo, eight years ago, gave us hope that we can survive after our downfall under President Estrada, but did she succeed? and we know that the answer is no, and we know that this is why we are looking for another saving grace. but we cannot push for another Estrada presidency just because he is still the most charming figure in politics. LET US GET OUT OF THE BEAUTY PAGEANT, FOR THIS IS NOT ONE! LET US GET OUT OF THE BOOB TUBE, BECAUSE THE WORK, THE DUTIES OF A PRESIDENT IS TO MAKE BETTER A COUNTRY AND NOT TO BEAUTIFY THE SMALL SCREENS.

Philippines, there is hope for you, if only genuine people lived to see daylight and want to care for you. You are too beautiful to go to waste.

A New Day

I am not exagerating when I tell you that the moment I woke up this morning, I smiled and said to myself "Obama won!" I don't know what the difference is, it's just that it's absolutely monumental.

You wake up and see that things are the same. GOP supporters are i guess disgusted by the turn out. No GOP will accept that Bush slapped these things on them because for them, Bush is a hero. Major problem dudes: your hero had major casualties.

Fox News is still the same. What a crazy comment to listen to: maybe they served cocktails last night that is why all the kids were there. What a great way to malign the youth! And this is what they listen to? What happened to so-called fairness.

The problem is that they are maligning the youth who is the future of this country. Those who will serve this country for who knows how long. It always has been said that the youth are the future, and this is how to encourage the vote that they have made? How cruel! And when the youth goes against their will, they are called rebels. What has happened to respect for your own decisions? I certainly hope there is more to reconcile than to go against with.

Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek. --- Newly Elected President Barack Obama

an OB and an 08 look pretty much alike...

welcome, el Presidente Barack Obama!!!

*claps! claps! claps!*

after three drafts

Fish Tank is overjoyed! after a long day in the Fish Tank's life, she was still pumped up to eat hearty and do the pile of dishes in the sink. why?

she was watching Fox News be tame and sullen in tone as they reported that Senator Barack Obama has led the tally of voting returns. yahoo! the slap in the ass, Fox!

right now, i am actually too sleepy but i cannot help but to go around the blog roll and try to keep up with everyones thoughts about the election, voting, and the turn out. it is truly marvelous, and after three drafts of thinking what exactly should i say, i still do not have enough words to express my glee to these events.

my words are at a loss here. all i gotta say is, America is now officially an Obama-nation!!! Today is a bright new day, and as what Wunderkraut said: Congratulations, America!
