Press Statement on Execution of Three OFW's in China
The Filipino people are one in praying for the souls of the three OFW's who were executed today, March 30, 2011, in China, after the Supreme People's Court have finalized their decision to continue with the execution.
The three OFW's, namely Sally Ordinario- Villanueva, Ramon Credo and Elizabeth Batain, were convicted for smuggling illegal drugs in Xiamen province (Villanueva & Credo) and in Shenzhen (Batain). The death sentence was to be carried last month but was postponed due to the efforts made by the Philippine government, specifically by Vice- President Jejomar Binay, in asking the Chinese authorities to put on hold the execution.
Rep. Angelo B. Palmones of AGHAM Party-list, who is also a member of the Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs of the House of Representatives, appeals to the Filipino people to actively pray for the souls of our executed countrymen and their bereaved families. He states, “I strongly urge our government to exert all efforts to end this modus of using our fellow Filipinos as drug mules. In any way that we look at it, Villanueva, Credo and Batain were victims of their fate and victims of those who took advantage of their vulnerable situation by using them to smuggle heroin to China.”
“Our OFW's boost our economy by lending their skills to other countries who needs additional manpower in doing domestic or technical work. May this be the common and only norm, and not use them as means to transport smuggled items and illegal drugs.” he adds.
