Browser saw this movie last month and he said he liked it. For a movie that's been showing in theaters for almost a month now, it still has a good following as the theater was half full (though it was really a relatively smaller venue, but still, for almost a month now, that is really something).
First thing to say, I REALLY LIKED IT! i swear i'll wait for its dvd release and watch it again. thats how much i liked the movie. Keri Russell was so great in this. she has the angelic face that had expressive eyes. she got the happy look (overly happy look by the way, which made that sequence funny), and the sad eyes expression which made a difference in the movie. how she reacted in each scene made you feel for her.
actually, while watching the movie, i cannot help but think of another movie that made a connection between what she cooks with what is going on with her life. the movie "Like Water For Chocolate" which was based from a novel with the same title by Laura Esquivel, had the same concept as "Waitress", however they differed on some things such as the set-up and all. i wouldnt be surprised if it was part of the inspiration in making this movie (though of course it is something that we cannot be sure of now). here are some elements that made them similar:
(1) affair- in "Like Water..." an affair between Tita and Pedro happens after Pedro was forced to marry Tita's younger sister Rosaura. In the "Waitress", an affair between Jenna and Dr. Pomatter happens since they find dissatisfaction in their marriages. they found themselves unhappy that they jumped into the crazy chance they get when they are together (the excitement of something forbidden? haha!).
(2) food- "Like Water..." featured a whole variety of dishes like the quail on rose petal syrup. the rose petals came from flowers from Pedro, and when Rosaura mixed it on the dish, there was an element on the rose that when you eat it (just as what Gertrudis did), she became "hot/warm" and was fiery and ready to fall in love and eloped with that guy who saved her from the fire (dont ask me how it happened. its really funny. when you read the book, the lines are funny, but when you see the movie with the literal translation to that scene, its hilarious). in "Waitress", its all pies, but she makes her pies out of how she feels at the moment she's thinking of it. like her bad baby pie, or her naughty pumpkin pie, or her Earl would kill me pie (how she also named them is funny).
(3) setting- small town.
what made the two movies different was how the story moved on. in "Like Water..." after Rosaura died, Tita and Pedro had a chance to renew their passion for each other (however, they were a bit old that time that Pedro died on their first night). in "Waitress", she did not end up with either men (which is a logical decision), but a different love came up which is her love for her daughter, and that made her strong to move on and really have a fresh start on life.
some realizations from the movie: (a) start fresh. very nice to remember. (b) if you're gonna watch the movie, bring a hunny. its sweet (though remind your hunny that affairs cannot be tolerated). (c) part of the point of the story is that sometimes, when you fall in love, you look funny coz you are just so happy, so excited, so blissful. but when reality hits you back, you realize that its not all love songs and seraphs in the air, you get back to reality with your sad eyes. (d) when will someone tell me that my sad eyes still make me beautiful and when will someone hold me for 20 minutes without end? (according to the movie, it's: hold you for 20 minutes without kissing you or what. someone who will hold you without any selfishness).
*sigh!* i suck! im sucking on all love in this movie. but i like it. i like the feeling. but still if youre really thinking of watching it, follow letter b.... or yeah just take anyone with you and laugh and cry with them. =) oh yeah! i give it 4/5.
